FINE ART PRINTMAKING
ARTIST STATEMENT
I discuss the "disease hidden" of modernity hidden behind the alienated relationship between people and things. When the main activities of a society gradually become the image of production and consumption, the society becomes "modern" (Sontag, 2003), while Baudelaire (2008) believes that the tangible world has become "a storeroom of symbols and images". Symbols replace all reality and become the most important value factor. Modernity brings prosperity to mankind, but at the same time, it will also make mankind present a state of nothingness.
In the third unit, I take the advertising image as the starting point to deeply study some problems brought by modernity from the perspective of consumerism. Based on national culture and personal experience, I present the survival dilemma of a modern person in the form of collage. Modernity not only brings people comfortable life and ultimate enjoyment, but also implies crisis.
The work is in the form of collage. I try to create it in a surrealistic way. I add a lot of metaphors to the work, such as digitized mirrors, false colors, sky, flowers, masks and other factors. I digitize the pictures and then collage them. I mix many true and false pictures to form a picture with mystical color. Finally, I present this morbid life in the form of infinite flip card
I think the infinite flip card is a form that can well interpret my works. It combines "fantasy" and truth, and breaks through the "dream" woven by consumerism for us. Its infinite flipping nature also implies that human beings sink and wake up in this beautiful dream, and then sink again. It goes back and forth, forming a closed loop.
I hope to alert people to face the crisis brought by modernity with real images through comparison.
