FINE ART PRINTMAKING
HELTER - SKELTER
< Helter - skelter> , 2012
The story describes that lily is a fat and ugly girl. After full body cosmetic surgery, she has been loved by thousands of people and has become a dream supermodel. However, her body will always grow old. Her artificial body is slowly disintegrating.
The film is directed by Japanese photographer Ninagawa Mika. She is a famous photographer in Japan. Her works are colorful and gorgeous. The film describes the anxiety of women's appearance under consumerism. Although the form of expression is exaggerated, the description of anxiety is very real. What impressed me was that while every girl was talking about cosmetic surgery, the camera showed girls shopping for all kinds of nails, eyelashes and cosmetics in the cosmetics store. The posters posted in the store are always beautiful women with big eyes with fashionable hairstyles. The overwhelming posters also reflect the media's control over the public's aesthetics. In the film, every girl is examined like a commodity. The beautiful women will be respected and have the envy of the audience, while the girls who do not meet the mainstream aesthetics are bullied, Girls put their face changes on cosmetic surgery and make-up, and satisfy their senses by changing their shapes. The film decorates liliy with the most gorgeous colors. Although the colors are dazzling and colorful, which greatly stimulate people's visual nerves, they make people feel dark, heavy and distorted. Ninagawa Mika 's mockery of the audience's addiction to the entertainment media shows her accusation that women are stared and consumed.
In her works, the feelings of women's struggle and pain in the examination of their appearance infect me very much, so I take lily after the failure of cosmetic surgery as the protagonist of my collage. Her eyes are full of many emotions, including the calm after the failure of struggle, the contempt for the aesthetics that once limited themselves, and the resistance to the suffocating gaze, These emotions are what I want to show the audience in my collage. After I released my collage, a man once sent me a message saying that he felt very gloomy and suffocating when he saw my collage. I think this is exactly what I want. I hope to take lily as an examiner to stare at the people who have stared at her. In China, women have been used to this kind of scrutiny for a long time. Slowly, they even pay more attention to their appearance than the people who examine them. They forget to fight back. But I hope that in my collage, Lily can fight back in the same way as a reviewer.
